Summary: Great Little Snow thrower 2010-03-11
Comment: I got this just after we got 30 inches of snow. It came very fast. We were due to get more snow the day it came. It threw the snow about 10 feet. You could not go fast it would get slow, because the snow was very heavy and wet. I have used it several times since I first got it. The only disadvantage is it is electric and the cord gets very stiff in the cold. You have to watch which way you go so you are not always flipping the cord. It is nice not to have to shovel or work with gas. I recommend this to anyone who needs a nice small thrower.

Summary: life saver 2010-03-09
Comment: Never thought I'd need snow thrower in southern Maryland. After three 12 inch storms in six weeks with a 24 inch storm predicted I ordered one. Because of it's light weight and smaller size it did struggle a bit when depth reached 14 + inches of heavy wet snow but it kept on chugging and 26 inches later I had the cleanest (120 foot) driveway in neighborhood.

Summary: Did the job as expected 2010-03-02
Comment: Please note that I never owned a gas snow thrower, so I can't really compare the snow joe to a gas-powered machine.

The Snow Joe works great on fresh snow not thicker that 5-6 inches and for that I am giving 4 stars. It really did the job well. On the two recent snow storms in NJ, it worked great and save me $$$ on using a professional to remove the snow from my drive-way (150 feet!). Since it snowed like 12 inches each time I had to plow my snow twice (morning and late afternoon). Yes I said 5-6 inches without difficulties, after that, it does work, but you kind of put extra strain on the motor. Keep in mind that it will not work on frozen snow - it's not an ice breaker! and it is harder to throw wet snow and I guess that's the case for any snow thrower. Also, if you drove on your snow covered driveway and then try to remove the snow under your tire tracks with the snow Joe, it will be almost impossible as the snow is too compact! Other than these minor problems it's a great machine.

After hearing the few belt problems some of the reviewers reported, I bought an extra one just in case, but didn't need it.

I think the snow joe and the toro 1800 are very similar. I went with the SJ because it was much cheaper, paid $199 on amazon.com

Happy snow days

PS: by frozen snow I mean snow that started to melt and then freeze overnight

Comment: I bought the Snow Joe form PC Richards on Black Friday ($199). I also went to Home Depot and bought a 100 foot extension cord and a 50 foot extension cord.
The snow joe is great for what it is. It is an electric snow thrower-It is not gas and cannot be compared to a gas snow thrower. I have $800 Toro gas snow blower that is too much for me to use. I live 30 minutes form NYC and we get a good amount of snow. The snow joe loves light an powdery snow. Heavy wet snow it can handle as long as you respect its limitations. Before a snow I take a lubricant (ie WD40) and spray the inside of the machine and the chute-this must be done at least the night before as it keeps the machine form getting clogged. When you are dealing with thick heavy snow you can only use 2/3rd of the width of the machine. More than that taxes the motor and will probably cause it to overheat an fail. I also shovel the ends of the driveway, close the the street where the salt gets in the snow. It makes the snow heavy and it just easier to shovel. I have a circular driveway with a shoot that goes to the rear garage (approximately 20 cars can fit in my driveway) It takes about 2 hours to snow joe and shovel the entire driveway. I use the 100 foot cord to do the majority of the work and then connect the 50 foot cord through a milk crate (so the the ends will never touch the snow- thus eliminate the risk of electrocution) to finish the job. this winter has been a very snowy winter in NYC and my snow joe blows the snow away. I just plug him in and there he blows. He is dependable and makes the work much easier. As long as you understand that he is electric and not gas and use him with those limitations in mind, he will perform well

Summary: Worked ok, for about 20 minutes 2010-02-26
Comment: I bought this after hurting my back and neck with these crazy snowstorms on the east coast. Let me say that I live in a townhouse so i have a one car driveway, about 30 feet of sidewalk and about 20 feet of a walkway. I figured this inexpensive snowblower was perfect for my needs. Well, I was wrong. I will say that setup was simple and easy. It did throw the snow pretty far, but I noticed that the bigger the snow pile the further it went. When i went through a 3 inch path it went about 3 feet, when i hit a 10-12 inch drift, it went around 20 feet. The tube from which the snow is thrown is quite cheaply made. while it has an auger that allows you to direct the snow throwing direction, as the heavier snow goes threw the tube, it continuously pushes the tube back toward the center. In any case, with all that said, it worked pretty well. It picked up the snow and moved it which was my main purpose of course. Just as i was finishing up, I went through one last drift, about 10 inches or so and the tube flew off and the housing had a huge crack. Now it is useless and I will be returning it.
