I had to replace this gear on my hardly used Murray snowblower. I found my snowblower was shipped from the factory with no grease installed. The gear lasted 3 years with no grease so I'm hoping this will last forever with proper lube installed. Fill the gear box with 00 weight grease. #2 is too thick and it will fling onto the gear case and then your gears run dry. You need a thin grease like 00. If you use gear lube the seals will most likely leak because the gaskets are paper.
