Prestone Driveway heat is superior to sodium chloride (rock salt) in several dimensions. Calcium chloride has a lower melting temperature and is less corrosive to concrete. Additionally, the jug is a superior container to large paper bags. The downside, of course, is that it is expensive. Deicing a large suburban home for three months a year could cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
The jug is excellent for use near home entrances as it can be conveniently stored indoors. Just reach outside and quickly sprinkling the salt outside the door. This is much easier and neater than reaching into a 40 pound bag and grabbing a handful of salt.
This lower melting temperature offers some additional benefits when used creatively. If you would like store frozen foods and don't have dry ice handy, a frozen 2 liter bottle of a saturated CaCl solution may work.
