Prestone Driveway Heat

Pros:

- It works! Spread the pellets with your hands, a hand-crank grass-seed spreader or whatever, and you'll see quick results - IF it's not super cold outside. That is, ice melting (and subsequent evaporation) is quick when it's in the 30's or higher, but MUCH slower when it's in the lower 20's or below. It melts ice over concrete, blacktop, synthetic decking, or wood.

Cons:

- The container's screw top is not factory sealed (no gasket), so the calcium chloride pellets start absorbing moisture in the air from the 1st day of packaging. As a result of this planned obsolescence by Prestone, if you don't use it the first season, it might have absorbed so much moisture from the air, that the entire contents can solidify. Once that happens, product effectiveness is diminished; however, if you crush the solid product into small particles, it may still work reasonably well.

- The container's stiff plastic is...Read more

We did buy this locally but it would be worth it to get it from Amazon if you can't find it. It doesn't work on a really thick layer of snow and ice but if you can get out to clear most of the stuff off, this wil do the rest. This kept our ramp, stairs, porch and driveway clear and dry . . . and so when the temperature dropped that night, no black ice for us in the morning.

We had quite a bit of snow, ice and freezing rain. I bought this product based on good reviews and the claims on the package label: de-ices faster and at lower temperatures, no powdery residue, "concentrated" so less product is required and it's safer for plants and vegetation. I applied as directed onto surfaces that were covered with ice such as my driveway, entryway and front sidewalk and removed once it melted.

All seemed well UNTIL I stepped outside after the last snow melted of the season. In all of the areas where the product (pellets) were applied the concrete had formed little circles then CHIPPED and FLAKED off! I was horrified that this product claimed to be safe and it did so much damage to my driveway, entryway and front sidewalk. I contacted Prestone about the damage and they informed me that this product is one of the strongest of its kind, it contains Calcium Chloride which is much different than most de-icers and it's very...Read more
